Reaching new heights on two wheels

Casey

Casey’s relationship with maps began as a child while staring at maps pulled from old National Geographics. Soon his bedroom walls were covered with charts from all over the world and his days were spent exploring the woods and creeks surrounding his home. Maps became Casey’s trusted companion as his thirst for exploration grew. By the time he was 17yrs old, maps were keeping him company on long solo flights across New York in rented Cessna 152s. Together they blasted around the US and Europe on a motorcycle, climbed mountains in the Cascades, and toured by bike through the deserts of the South West. While living in Portland, Oregon Casey supported his traveling habit by teaching rock climbing and working as an arborist. Eventually maps guided him back to the Finger Lakes where he set out to rediscover his native lands via bike. Years later and many miles of road, single track, and racing, have given him skills on a bike and guide’s knowledge of the region. Maps are still a big part of Casey’s life helping him lay out the next race course or planning the next epic group ride.

Val

Val rides a lot. She commutes to and from work year-round, saving up to 125 miles on the car per week. Val rediscovered bicycling just a few years ago, and since then, she has consistently logged thousands of miles per year. She rode a double century less than three months after purchasing her first road bike. Val’s strengths lie primarily in road and cyclocross riding, but she also loves to ride her mountain bike. In addition to turning the pedals, Val is an experienced pit-crew leader for 24-hour and other endurance mountain biking events. Her behind-the-scenes contributions help teams maximize their efficiency, stay motivated, and maintain sanity. Val’s level-headedness, organization, and empathy make her an asset to have on group rides and events. She has also been known to spontaneously burst into bouts of the Running Man in gas station parking lots, but whether or not this is an asset has yet to be determined. When not involved in a two-wheeled pursuit, Val is a therapist for troubled youth. In her free time, she can be found painting, canoeing, reading, or walking with her cats in the woods.

Mark

Mark just might have Tri-Flo running through his veins. He has been chasing adventures on two wheels since he was 4 years old. Mark used to race motocross, and his talents in downhill, jumping, and handling have clearly transferred to his mountain biking abilities. Mark is a free riding wizard but also moves with speed and finesse on a road bike. He will ride just about anything, anywhere, including a hot pink big wheel on a technical course through his garage. When Mark found himself without a team just days before a 24-hour race, he decided to ride solo, and the best advice he received came from his wife Suzanne, who said, "All you have to do is ride your bike all day and night. It's what you do anyway." He had a podium finish. Those who ride with Mark appreciate his enthusiasm, supportiveness of others, willingness to try new things, and down-to-earth attitude. When Mark is not clipped into his pedals, he performs bike surgeries as the head mechanic at the Geneva Bicycle Center, creates original artwork, builds trails and jumps, and relaxes with Cadence Dog and Suzanne. You can read about Mark's adventures and racing at the Gary Fisher 29er Crew website.

Suzanne

Suzanne's cheerful, motivating, energetic, and reassuring demeanor has influenced many guys and gals to get out and ride. And once they're out there, Suzanne's skills and ability to instruct have inspired riders to reach their own new heights. Experienced and proficient in both road and mountain, Suzanne has little reason to hold back. She'll ride in the woods at 10pm, lead a pace line on pavement through 30-mile per hour head winds, or gear up for a snowy, slushy winter endeavor (just as long as she can keep her feet warm). Suzanne and her husband Mark, as a 2-person team, are a force to be reckoned with in 6-hour and 24-hour endurance racing. They have yet to be beaten by a male/female combo. Suzanne is knowledgeable in fitness, training regimes, and nutrition and has helped a handful of people develop their own personal paths to success. She practices what she preaches and was once found hunched over her bike in the woods in the middle of the night at a 24hr race, licking a spilled gel pack off her frame, because she knew the importance of preventing a bonk. In her life off the bike, Suzanne keeps Cadence Dog looking too fit to be a rottweiler, paints the walls of her house the most fitting (and unique) colors, and cooks a really spicy chili. Suzanne was a special education teacher for several years before she found herself educating people about bikes at the Geneva Bicycle Center.
